What’s Interesting About This Concert
- The concert opens and closes with works accompanied by singing wine glasses, a sound that is very ethereal and even a bit cosmic. Glasses are partially filled with the perfect amount water giving each glass its pitch. Singers wet their fingers and rub the rim of the glass until it begins to sing. The sounds created by these glasses is a sound unlike any other.
- Hear an evocative arrangement of Canadian singer-songwriter Loreena McKennitt’s Tango to Evora. It was featured in the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith. It incorporates a tango rhythm and light clapping, drawing its inspiration from the ancient Celtic roots of Évora, Portugal.
- Key Chorale interpretations of the music of Ola Gejilo are remarkable. Dark Night of the Soul sets a poem by 16th-century mystic St. John of the Cross with music that is lush, vibrant and rhapsodic. Serenity is set for 8-part choir and solo cello which the composer describes as “passionate peacefulness—a peacefulness that is not passive, but filled with warmth, faith, passion and gentle intent.”
