We are very proud and excited that in July 2017 Key Chorale will perform Cirque des Voix® with the Circus Arts Conservatory in Washington, D. C. as invited guests to the 2017 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. To honor and commemorate this very special invitation, Key Chorale has commissioned composer Ola Gjeilo to create an original 12-minute musical suite for chorus and orchestra that will accompany the performance of NEA Fellow and world-class aerialist, Dolly Jacobs.
The original musical suite will have its world premiere at this year’s seventh season of Cirque des Voix®, which will take place March 24, 25 & 26, 2017 in the Circus Arts Conservatory Big Top at Nathan Benderson Park. It will then be featured as an important part of our Washington, D.C. performances at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on July 7 & 8, 2017.
This unique music commission project from a world-renowned contemporary composer is being funded by contributions to the Richard Storm Commission Fund. You can be a part of this special opportunity to commission an original music composition through Key Chorale’s Music by the Measure fundraising campaign that allows individual donors to sponsor measures of the musical suite being created by Composer Gjeilo.
Our commission cost is $15,000. We ask you to consider helping us fund this special musical commission and collaboration project for our Smithsonian debut by sponsoring a part of the 362 measures of the 12-minute suite at $42 per measure.
What is a musical measure?
In musical notation, a bar (or measure) is a segment of time corresponding to a specific number of beats in which each beat is represented by a particular note value and the boundaries of the bar are indicated by vertical bar lines. This is a measure without your help:
Just as a composer writes the music measure by measure,
with your help we can build the full musical score
