Key Chorale is now nearing its 30th anniversary, bringing great choral music to audiences in southwest Florida. The chorale was founded in Sarasota, Florida in 1985 by Ann Stephenson-Moe, organist and choirmaster at Church of the Redeemer and Don Ryno, Minister of Music at St. Boniface Church.
The chorale is comprised of 110 auditioned voices with a professional base of Section Leaders and Core Singers. It has collaborated with other arts groups in the area, including the Sarasota Orchestra, Sarasota Opera, Sarasota Ballet, Circus Sarasota, Sarasota Young Voices and Sybarite5 to bring both celebrated and innovative music to the area.
In its collaboration with the Sarasota Orchestra, Key Chorale has performed such works as Poulenc’s Gloria, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 and Haydn’s Creation. A highlight of the group’s history is a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the National Symphony conducted by Leonard Slatkin.
After Dr. Daniel Moe completed 21 years leading the chorale and retired at the end of the 2007 season, Joseph Caulkins was chosen as the chorale’s new Artistic Director and Conductor. Now, after completing 6 successful seasons at the helm, Joseph is planning even more adventurous programming for the group for the future.
The commissioning of new choral music has always been a priority of the Chorale, and has included Three Days by the Sea by Gwyneth Walker and Invocations – Prayers for the Earth by Dale Warland. A new commission, The Lake Isle, by the exciting young composer Ola Gjeilo will be featured in a concert of his music, Luminosity, in April of 2014.
Collaboration with Circus Sarasota has resulted in the creation of a new art form, Cirque des Voix™ which has completed several enormously successful seasons and is continuing to grow in popularity as it presents an exciting mix of great music with dazzling circus acts.
Versatile, with a clear beat and known for his innovative programming, Maestro Caulkins is at home with music from classics to pops, baroque to ballet. His work alongside Erich Kunzel and Dale Warland and his time under the tutelage of Helmuth Rilling at the Oregon Bach Festival have shaped him into a sought after conductor.
